The 21st Century Suitcase
By Kyle Gilligan
A new start-up called Bluesmart is hoping to revolutionize the
way we see luggage. Bluesmart is developing a smart suitcase that will offer a variety
of features that will take away much of the hassle surrounding luggage when traveling.
As with most new technologies being developed, the Bluesmart carry-on will be
connected and used in conjunction with a smartphone. From the Bluesmart’s app,
users can lock/unlock their suitcase, use GPS to track the location of their
suitcase, view their travel history, and check the total weight through a built
the internal scale. Another very useful feature will be the built in battery
that is capable of charging a phone 6 times over. Check out the video below to see more of the features this smart suitcase will offer.
Bluesmart is using crowdfunding through indiegogo.com to launch
the new carry-on suitcase, where they have already received over $500,000 of funding. Funders who contribute $235 will receive one of the
first Bluesmart carry-on’s produced. However, according to their crowdfunding
page, the estimated delivery is not until August 2015.

This suit case does not sound appealing to me just because I do not travel enough to spend $235 on a suit case. I have maybe been on a plain a total of 7 times in my life. So spending $235 on a suit case is not an option for my lifestyle. There are many draw backs I could see happening with this technology. First off, is this even aloud on air planes? Especially with all the bomb threats and security and safety issues. Also what happens when your phone or suit case dies or is stolen?
ReplyDeleteNo this suitcase is not very appealing to me, but that does not mean that is not appealing to people that have to travel a lot. I think it is pretty cool that the suitcase has a scale in it because I have had to deal with getting bags under a certain weight so they are still free to check. I think that the ability the suitcase has to charge phones will intrigue a lot of people because of how much traveling drains the phone battery life.
ReplyDeleteThis suitcase sounds awesome and completely worth $235, especially since I plan on traveling a lot in my lifetime. It helps you avoid the hassle of weighing your bag and you could potentially completely avoid the hassle of losing your bag for the rest of your flying career. Sounds like a great deal!
